Freetown Memorial
Freetown Memorial is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission memorial honouring 1,212 casualties of the First World War and 247 of the Second World War in the Sierra Leonean capital.
The story
Cared for by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, this is an integrated memorial in the Sierra Leonean capital, bringing two world wars together in a single place of commemoration. It now honours 1,212 people who died in the First World War and 247 who died in the Second World War. The memorial has recently been extended. For that project the Commission worked with African design studios, an approach it also took on the Cape Town Labour Corps Memorial. The extension ties remembrance of both wars to design work from the continent, and gives Freetown a place to reflect on Sierra Leone's part in those conflicts.
