Fişekhane

Once the cartridge factory of the Ottoman army, Fişekhane is a restored 19th-century industrial complex in Zeytinburnu, now filled with restaurants, cafes, stages, galleries and a cinema rather than clothing stores.

The story

The building was one of the key structures of the Zeytinburnu Fabrika-i Hümayun, an imperial works tied to the Ottoman army's modernisation in the first half of the 19th century. Closed to the public for more than a century, it has been carefully restored, keeping traces of its original architecture while adapting the halls for new uses. Its main stage and second stage host theatre, concerts and children's plays. The gallery spaces, including the Cocoon Gallery, take exhibitions and workshops. An open-air cinema, an organic market and kite and digital art festivals fill the calendar. The food covers Turkish and international cooking, with Kronotrop roasting its own beans on site, MUÀ gelato made in the Florentine tradition and Güzelburç Antakya's dishes from Chef Ümit Şabanoğlu. Smaller shops sell spices, jewellery and tableware.

TAGGG AI
  • Weekends get very busy, so weekday visits, especially in the morning, are calmer and more pleasant.
  • It is about a three-minute walk from the Marmaray station, making it easy to reach without a car.
  • A bridge from the garden crosses the road to the seaside, where you can continue with a walk along the water.
