Fàbrica de Creació Fabra i Coats

A former textile mill in Sant Andreu now serves as Barcelona's municipal creation factory, housing more than 100 resident artistic projects alongside exhibitions, concerts, festivals and open rehearsals.

The story

Fabra i Coats was once an important textile company of the industrial era, and its old factory buildings now form an ecosystem where artists and collectives across disciplines develop their work with support. More than 100 projects are in residence at a time, and guided visits trace the site's story from spinning mills to cultural creation. The large complex is set up for exhibitions, concerts and workshops, with activities most weeks. It hosts Festival 42, devoted to fantastic genres, the Mozilla Festival and Cara B concerts, and a cycle of open rehearsals lets resident artists share work in progress with the public. The buildings also become the Three Wise Men's toy factory, where children post wish letters and watch an outdoor dance show, with a light display on the factory windows after dark.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • For the Three Wise Men toy factory at Christmas, allow plenty of time, as queues of an hour or more are common.
  • During festival concerts there are usually two or three spots inside selling food and drinks.
  • A metro station sits nearby, making it easy to reach from the centre even though it is far from other sights.
