Edicola 518

Edicola 518 reimagines the Perugia newsstand as a bookshop and cultural hangout, stocking boundary-pushing magazines and books that bigger shops miss, alongside coffee, drinks and a steady programme of events.

The story

Opened in 2016, Edicola 518 grew out of Emergenze, a publishing project begun in December 2014 out of affection for its home territory and for printed paper. Run as a social cooperative, it calls itself an urban oasis for cultural exhibitionism and works under the motto "A paradise built in hell". The shelves mix independent magazines, books and local products, and a counter serves coffee and drinks. The shop also acts as a base for wider projects: the "Lezioni di Anarchia" series running since 2017, the Teatro Sant'Ercolano programme, the Angostura interview series, and "Acque dolcissime", a body of research, podcasts and exhibitions on the Tiber and inland waters. Artist Saverio Montella created a limited series of handkerchiefs as a gift for its subscribers.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Staff are happy to guide you through the shelves and suggest magazines or books beyond the usual picks.
  • Check for upcoming events, as the shop organises talks and gatherings frequently.
  • Carefully made coffee and drinks make it easy to linger over a new magazine rather than just browse.
