Dionysos Zonar's

Set in the shadow of the Acropolis rock, between Thissio and Makrygianni, Dionysos Zonar's pairs Greek cooking with fusion touches and a close, direct view of the Parthenon, best at sunset and after dark.

The story

The restaurant sits in the historic centre of Athens, reached by walkways that link Thissio on one side with Makrygianni on the other. The first-floor dining room holds the formal service and the Acropolis view, with silverware changed between courses. Downstairs runs a different, more casual menu, and there is also a terrace and a courtyard. A piano is available for private and corporate events. The kitchen builds on Greek cuisine with fusion and contemporary elements, so the menu runs from moussaka and Greek salad to ravioli, octopus, baked spinach and cheese cannelloni and a chocolate lava cake. The wine list pairs local labels with international bottles, mostly French. It suits lunch, dinner or simply a drink at sunset, when the Parthenon fills the view.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Book well in advance for dinner, and ask for the first-floor dining room, where the Acropolis view is.
  • The ravioli, moussaka and octopus are standout dishes worth ordering.
  • The upstairs room is formal, so dress up; the downstairs menu is more casual.
