Cunningham Pier

Jutting out from Geelong's waterfront, Cunningham Pier draws anglers casting for decent-sized fish, walkers out for a stroll in any season, and drinkers heading to the bar and restaurants at its far end.

The story

A favourite spot for fishermen, Cunningham Pier sits along Geelong's waterfront bollard walk, where 100 painted timber bollards reclaimed from old piers depict characters from the city's history. Locals, out-of-towners and tourists come to fish, stroll or simply sit by the water, joined by ducks, gulls and pigeons. The carousel area nearby hosts a Sunday market selling hot food, local produce and native products. At the end of the pier, restaurants and a function centre make a destination of the walk. Wah Bah, the bar out here, serves its cocktails by the jug for sharing alongside a dedicated bao menu. To the east of the pier, a jetty now serves the Portarlington–Melbourne ferry, making the pier a starting point for trips across the bay as well as a place to linger.
