Columbia Road Flower Market

Every Sunday a road of Victorian shops off Hackney Road in Bethnal Green fills with flower and plant stalls, backed by some sixty independent galleries, delis, vintage stores, pubs and cafés.

The story

Columbia Road sits in the East End at the edge of the City, with Shoreditch to the west and Brick Lane and Spitalfields close by. On market day vendors line the street with cut flowers and plants, from roses to anemones, and the stallholders know their stock well. Toward the end of trading, flowers go at bargain rates. Behind the stalls is one of the few streets in the country made up entirely of independent businesses: small art galleries, cupcake shops, English and Italian delis, antique, gardening and gift shops, plus Lily Vanilli bakery and Jack Garcia. The road also hosts a free Day of the Dead festival with music, dance, marigolds and a procession. For heavy hauls, Pedal Me offers bicycle delivery from near the Bird Cage.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Arrive early, since by late morning the street gets very crowded and the stalls are hard to browse.
  • Stay until near closing for bargains on flowers as the stallholders clear their stock.
  • Stop at Jack Garcia for coffee and a canelé, and consider adding the nearby Museum of Home.
