Cinapos
Once King Otto's stables, this 1845 neoclassical building on pedestrian Iraklidon Street in Thissio is now Cinapos, where Greek dishes arrive in the centre of the table for sharing, with good wine.
The story
The building's history runs from 1845, when it housed King Otto's stables, to a later life as one of the oldest schools in Athens. Today its courtyard is modelled on the squares of Greek villages, and there is a wine cellar, with a sommelier on hand to talk through the options. As evening falls and the lights come on, the mood turns buzzy but relaxed. The cooking is typical Greek with a modern twist, built around plates meant to be shared: homemade lakerda, the marinated fish; bougiourdi for the group; beetroot with xygalo and citrus. Halva or walnut pie closes the meal, and the bar mixes unusual cocktails alongside a broad choice of wines, beers and shots.
