Casa Batlló

Blue tiles shading from indigo to pale blue light the central well of this UNESCO-listed Gaudí house in the Eixample, where a scale-like façade, bone-like balconies and a dragon-backed roof avoid nearly every straight line.

The story

When Josep Batlló commissioned Antoni Gaudí, he granted him total creative freedom. A job that began as a demolition became a house where almost nothing runs straight. Mosaic shimmers across the façade like dragon scales, the balconies resemble masks of bone, and the roof curves like the spine of a mythical creature. Inside, the shades of the blue light well spread daylight evenly from top to bottom, and even door handles and staircases follow organic forms. The visit ends in a basement theatre showing an immersive light-and-shadow film. The third floor, Gaudí's last original residence, now opens for tours with a gourmet tasting. Night visits, evening concerts and the Gaudí-Miró-Gomis exhibition with the Fundació Joan Miró extend the programme. Casa Batlló was the first cultural organisation internationally with a neurodiverse front-of-house team.
