Carbone London

Major Food Group's Italian-American restaurant brings its New York red-sauce theatre to the former American Embassy in Mayfair, with tuxedoed captains, tableside Caesars and a dessert tray paraded through Ken Fulk's rooms.

The story

Founded in New York in 2013 by Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi and Jeff Zalaznick, Carbone honours the Italian restaurants of 1950s New York, and this is its first European outpost. Ken Fulk designed the two floors of dining rooms, cocktail lounges and a private suite, with velvet banquettes, mosaic tiles and lacquered wood. Vito Schnabel curated the art, including works by Ai Weiwei, Julian Schnabel and Francesco Clemente. Captains in burgundy Zac Posen tuxedos run the room, and the menu covers the canon: Spicy Rigatoni Vodka, Octopus Pizzaiolo and Veal Parmesan, with the Caesar alla ZZ and Dover Sole Piccata finished at the table. Meals open with complimentary bread, salami and pickled vegetables, portions are large, and desserts such as tiramisu, lemon cheesecake and carrot cake arrive on a grand tray to choose from.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Save room for the dessert tray, where the carrot cake and cheesecake are standout choices.
  • Portions are very large, so consider sharing dishes rather than ordering a full course each.
  • You may be seated in the bar or lounge for a cocktail while your table is prepared.
