Battersea Park

Laid out between 1854 and 1870, this 200-acre Victorian park between Albert Bridge and Chelsea Bridge pairs a riverside promenade and large lake with a children's zoo, the Peace Pagoda and sports grounds.

The story

The park has views across the river on one side and dense greenery on the other, with many notable trees and ecological areas. The Peace Pagoda stands by the water, a few minutes' walk from the Tea Terrace, fountain and pond. Boats and bicycles can be hired, and the Pump House gallery, a bandstand and an approved ceremony venue sit within the grounds. Morning runners and dog walkers share the paths, families head for the play areas and the zoo, and tennis courts and all-weather pitches cater for sport. The council is restoring the Cascades, the park's historic waterfall, so it can flow again powered by solar energy. Battersea Power Station, now an upmarket shopping centre with a chimney lift lookout, makes an easy pairing with a visit.
