Bangladesh Military Museum

Run by the Bangladesh Army beside the Novo Theatre, this air-conditioned museum traces the nation's armed forces through Army, Navy and Air Force galleries, Liberation War displays and real tanks and fighter jets outside.

The story

Also known as the Bangabandhu Military Museum, the building on Bijoy Sarani gives each service its own galleries. The Navy section sits underground and is designed to feel like being under the sea, with a submarine to explore. Elsewhere there is a fighter jet cockpit, along with uniforms, weapons, medals and historical documents. The 1971 Liberation War section is especially moving. Further displays cover the Bangladesh Rifles Mutiny and the country's UN peacekeeping missions, while the Toshakhana holds gifts and honours received by national leaders. Interactive elements run throughout, including augmented and virtual reality experiences, a machine gun shooting simulation and a 3D art gallery. On the way out, an outdoor exhibit brings tanks, military vehicles and fighter jets within arm's reach, and the machines are there to be explored hands-on.
