The story

Architect Vasilis Tsagris designed the building in the late 1920s, mixing elements from several European architectural traditions, and it was declared a listed monument in 1985. After its façade was restored and its interiors reworked, the Foundation opened here in December 2007. Inside are galleries over three floors, an auditorium for concerts, lectures and theatre, an art shop and the KADRO café. The Foundation's remit is the art and music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Exhibitions change through the year, ranging from Greek painters to international names such as Kylie Manning, alongside a show on the architecture of Christos Papoulias. A bequest gave the Foundation the collection and archive of painter Spyros Papaloukas, which is still being researched and digitised. The RAW strand, running since 2021, presents experimental projects.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Leave time for the bright café on the first floor after walking the galleries.
  • The small ground-floor shop stocks unusual pieces and works well for souvenirs.
  • Come on foot if you can, since street parking nearby is hard and a garage is the better bet.
