Arter
Rotating shows of video, film and immersive installation fill Arter, a contemporary art centre in Beyoğlu with a striking glass-walled building, a well-stocked bookshop and a café serving proper lunches.
The story
Most exhibitions here are temporary, so the programme changes regularly and what you find depends on when you go. Works by local and international artists lean toward conceptual and experimental formats rather than painting or photography, and the centre also hosts performances, seminars and panels. Shows spread across several floors, with careful lighting and calm rooms that suit an unhurried pace. The building is an attraction in its own right, with glass walls that open up views and a small rooftop terrace. Downstairs, the Divan café serves coffee, cake and hot lunches, and there is a garden for lingering afterwards. The gift shop doubles as a thoughtfully stocked bookshop. Other galleries are dotted around the neighbourhood, and the walk down from Taksim passes through rougher streets.
Good to know
TAGGG AI- ✦A free shuttle runs between Taksim and Arter, sparing you the walk down through less pleasant streets.
- ✦Check what is on before going, since some floors close while new exhibitions are being installed.
- ✦Weekdays are quiet; allow around an hour for the exhibitions plus extra time for the bookshop.
